William Morris, Father of the Arts & Crafts Movement
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a vivid imagination. I’ve always been able to see a finished room or a piece of furniture in my mind’s eye before even taking a measurement. My education in art school and interior design laid the technical foundation, and the rest – creativity, originality and an obsessive need for precision – was up to me.
I have more than 20 years of experience in cabinet making (kitchens, built-ins), literally hundreds of fireplace mantels, in addition to custom interior and exterior furniture and pieces.
With absolutely everything I do I take extreme pride in the meticulous attention to detail I give each project. I realize it’s the small finishing details, in addition to the sturdy design that sets my work apart.
For me, the art of creating from raw materials is so much more than that. There is a profound philosophy to which I have a special kinship to – the idealism of craftsmanship that was evidenced in the Arts and Crafts movement of the past. It wasn’t just the selling of a product to be disposed of as in mass production; it was producing a timepiece with enduring quality. Look around and you can see and hear where that philosophy has gotten us.
Unfortunately, with mass production, warehouse, mail order, fast-paced consumerism, things have changed drastically. So too has the integrity of a piece of furniture. The passion, commitment to quality and appreciation for the importance of the small details has been lost in this new age of disposable living.
There are; however, still some of us out here that hold true to the artisan/craftsman doctrine. For me, I’m selling the philosophy and ideals along with each piece I create. I would like nothing better than to build something for someone who appreciates fine craftsmanship and wants a one-of-a-kind addition to your home that will emphasize the character of its environment.
